Ikea Home Planner

Posted on | May 21, 2010 |

Make your dream room a reality. Become your own interior designer with the help of the IKEA Planner Tools. Drag and drop your choice of furniture into the room and fit them to the exact measurements of your home. Rearrange and try different styles until you’re satisfied with the result. View it in 3-D and print with all the measurements, just like an architect. See how much it will cost and get the list of all products. Once you’re happy with your plan, save it onto the IKEA server so that you can pick it up at your nearest IKEA store. Then get final planning advice and assistance from us before purchasing the products you need to make your virtual room a reality.

I tested the Ikea planner and used a basic rectangular shaped bedroom. It all starts in the room then work the plan out by dragging and dropping the furniture & furnishing.

The positives:

  • It’s free and we can practice furnishing our home via this Ikea home planner freeware. You can see instantly if furniture fits and somehow, if it looks good.
  • Lots of furniture to choose from.
  • Items are categorized neatly and intelligently (unlike our categorization that needs lots of re-structuring).
  • After the furnishing and planning, you may hit the “item list” button to see the final products you got and its price. My test plan registered about 1900 USD.
  • It has 3D view for better visualization, 3D view that you can pan, zoom and move around.
  • File is save-able to your hard drive. Save it via bitmap (BMP) or save in Ikea Home Planner file, .fpf. You may save the file too inside an Ikea profile that you can create. (For US users, they can bring the file to the nearest IKEA store and go from there.) Me, I used the “print screen” option to instantly save the file .jpeg then cropped it (see above.)

The negatives:

  • Units are exclusively in English (inch – feet). For those who prefer Metric, prepare to open your calculator and do some conversions.
  • The version I have doesn’t have living space furnishing option. Only bedroom, dining & kitchen, office & study options. Thus, I tested furnishing a bedroom.
  • No accents, lamps and other accessories. Kinda sucks because here in the Philippines, popular Ikea products are the cool accessories and not the biggie Ikea furniture. Yeah, the home products found inside Ikea Philippines Store. (See the wall in the middle in my test bedroom? That’s supposed to be a divider. Much like this living space – dining space divider.)
  • No rendering.

I know this is just a test plan but I hope my wife doesn’t see this plan. After placing the bar table near the picture window with a possible view of nature, TV console at the foot of the bed to watch DVD ’til I sleep and workdesk behind the divider for easy computing… look at the way I put in the vanity mirror and the dresser just like that. :-P

And notice the mirror above the headboard? We have something like that.

Download here.

It’s about 20mb download, smaller than the video file that you’ve downloaded recently.
