Lavinder Lighting Collection Debuts as Popular Showroom Fetes 10th Anniversary

Posted on | July 29, 2010 |

Thomas Lavin celebrates his Los Angeles showroom’s 10th anniversary in 2010 with the introduction of Lavinder, his debut line of custom home furnishings, and a party hosted by Elle Décor editor in chief Margaret Russell on September 23.

Lavinder is the brainchild of Thomas Lavin and showroom vice president Ramona Drost, who have always encouraged designers to create furnishings that they believe will enrich peoples’ lives. The brand launches with a collection of contemporary lighting featuring blackened steel and pâte de verre glass designed by Gary Hutton and a retro credenza designed by Christopher Kennedy.

There are three fixtures in the introductory Lavinder lighting collection. Inspired by the grand industrial chandeliers found in 1930s New York apartment buildings, the Venetian pendant features a blackened steel ring hanging from a quartet of chains with tea light bulbs placed around the inner rim. The two other lights Hutton designed for Lavinder, the Pâte de Verre pendant and Pâte de Verre sconce, introduce salt-finished glass that is hand-blown in California.

The Thomas Lavin showroom teamed with designer Christopher Kennedy to create the Dustin credenza. The inspiration for the credenza was a paneled wall composed of numerous pieces of wood in varying sizes and thickness in a mid-century Palm Springs house. The piece has a retro connotation and also fits with today’s organic contemporary trend. The natural walnut body of the Dustin contrasts the sleek metal base, which references the innovative steel homes built in the desert in the ’50s. The credenza is customizable, with inside compartments that offer myriad options, including shelving, drawers or a pop-up mechanism for a television.

Lavinder also offers select pieces of accessory furniture, such as the Martini table, a vintage-inspired bronze side table, bar stools, and dining chairs. All pieces in the Lavinder collection are completely customizable and represent the exclusive aesthetic and superb quality that the Thomas Lavin showroom has built a reputation for presenting throughout the years.

Lavin, who is one of the youngest entrepreneurs in Los Angeles to successfully open, own and operate an interior design showroom featuring high-end furniture, fabric and lighting from the United States and Europe, started on Beverly Boulevard at Robertson, the crossroads of the Avenues of Art & Design, in March of the millennium and moved to his celebrated showplace in the Pacific Design Center exactly five years later in 2005. In just 10 years he has grown his showroom from a fledgling operation promoting a dozen furniture, textile and lighting companies to large-scale representation of more than 50 lines.

The Thomas Lavin showroom is a pioneer in bringing a wide range of high-end furniture, fabrics, textiles, lighting and accessories to Los Angeles. It is Lavin who launched the successful design careers of furniture wunderkind Jiun Ho and Fuse lighting designer Kevin Kolanowski, both of whom were among the first lines that Lavin and Drost represented when the showroom was born 10 years ago.

The anniversary party on Sept. 23 coincides with the Fall Preview market event at the Pacific Design Center. The invitation-only party from 5:30 to 8 p.m. will be co-hosted by Margaret Russell and Thomas Lavin.
