Paredes Ancestral Home in Abra now a historical site

Posted on | February 27, 2013 |

BANGUED, Abra, Feb. 26(PIA) — The Paredes Ancestral Home in this capital town was inaugurated last February 23 as a national historical site on the occasion of the 3rd Miki Festival of the Bangued Town Fiesta.

Deputy Director Carminda R. Arevalo of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) installed the landmark of the Paredes Ancestral Home as historical site. The house located along Santiago Street, Bangued, Abra was the birthplace of the popular Don Quintin Paredes, a lawyer, politician, and statesman.

The occasion was graced by the key personalities from the Senate led by Director-General Antonio de Guzman who turned over Senate Resolution No. 136 Series of 2012 which declared the Paredes House as a National Historical Site in honor of the late Don Quintin Paredes, to his heirs represented by his grandson, Atty. Quintin “QP” Paredes, III .

The young Paredes and aunt, Mrs. Violeta Paredes-Valera, also an heiress of the said property signed the papers.

Three members of the Senate instrumental in the declaration of the said Paredes Home as Historical Site also sent their messages and were read by their representatives: Senator Loren Legarda who authored the Senate Resolution by Atty. Antonio Paredes, Jr.; Sen. Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos, Jr., through his Chief of Staff Ramon Cardenas of Tayum, Abra; and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile by former mayor of Paoay, Ilocos Norte, Ms. Nenuca Paredes Valera-Evangelista.

Legarda in a statement noted that from his humble beginnings in Bangued, Abra, Don Quintin went on to hold many important government positions such as Manila City Fiscal, Attorney General, Secretary of Justice, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Senate President Pro-Tempore, and later, Senate President. He was also a member of the parliamentary mission to the United States in 1919.
“Don Quintin authored the Magna Carta for Labor while never giving up on his advocacy in promoting vocational courses in education. He also contributed to the review of the provisions of the Revised Penal Code as a member of the Code Commission. But more than his exemplary service as a lawyer and legislator, Don Quintin championed the cause for civil liberties,” she detailed.

The teachers of the Bangued West Central School and their Drum and Lyre Corps also took the opportunity to pay tribute to the Paredeses through their cultural performances as their way of thanksgiving to the Paredes Clan for having donated the lot where their school buildings and facilities are erected.

The Paredes clan expressed grateful thanks and appreciation to all those who have helped made the event possible.

The Paredes Residence which used to be called the “Green House” in Bangued, will be opened to the general public. The life and accomplishments of the famous statesman are exhibited at the ground floor of the said building. – See more at: http://www.pia.gov.ph/news/index.php?article=111361808773#sthash.THX3eiZs.dpuf
