1. In what specific field of
design do you work on? Do you have a store of your own?
I am primarily in furniture designing and building. Yes, we do have a furniture store, the name is House of Leoque and we are happy and thankful to say that despite the challenging times, our shop is still alive and building.
2. What are the usual materials used to create your works?
We are in the business of making beautiful things that will last so the usual materials we are using are wood and metal. Also, we incorporate materials like fabric, rattan, bamboo and other indigenous materials as it gives a lot of character and texture in a furniture or space.
3. What is your usual subject matter? Why this?
Most of the time, the theme of our design revolves around the “Filipino Style.” A quick run-through of our portfolio and you will see what I mean by what we informally call “modern FIlipino furniture.”
4. Explain the process of art making in your works. (how do you design your works?)
I look at Filipino furniture design and the contemporary style for inspiration while being aware of what suits a space, understanding what the client needs and his budget, and always mindful of the form and function of the pieces.
5. From all your works, tell me about your most valuable designed piece? Why this?
I designed this furniture piece, a divan. It is a simple divan but It is special to me. It was inspired by my grandmother because she had this daybed-divan piece we used to hang out on when we were young. You see, my grandmother believed in our artistic minds and she was very supportive of our artistic side. So this divan was inspired by her and that old divan she had. I named this divan “Ezperanza”, my grandmother’s name.
6. Do you have something you are currently working on? If none, what is the most recent work you have designed? Give us a little background.
The making of creative, artsy and one-off pieces is taking one step back. The demand of the market now and our shop production capability dictate us to carry out full house furniture supply. Where, the designs are now dictated by the space and the budget and in collaboration with clients. The last project we worked on is a complete furniture supply of a 600 square-meter modern house. If there is commissioned work for one-of-a-kind piece that will come our way, we’ll be happy to work on it.
7. What are your inspirations in designing furniture?
As I mentioned earlier, I look at old Filipino designs, Philippine architecture and even culture. But at the same time I am aware of the current trends in furniture design and building. Making sure that even though our furniture are in theme with Filipino designs, they are not stuck from the past, certain that it will function well, structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing, now and in years to come.
8. What are your struggles in making a name in the art and design industry?
I do not have any struggles as my desire is not to make a name in the industry but have always been to produce good design, good furniture, one that can elicit positive emotion and satisfaction, one that can possibly outlast me or a name one can make.
9. What is your message to future designers like you?
First off, finish your studies, preferably related fields like Fine Arts, Interior Design or Industrial Design. Some the lessons and tasks you are doing now may have no use in the real world, but these years and the challenges, these will shape you and prepare you later in life. In terms of being a designer, keep on learning, be a sponge when it comes to design, look around things, people and places and look for ideas and inspirations. Finally, cliche as it may be, just be yourself. In time you will find your own style, build a portfolio and a great designer will emerge.
