CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Sept. 24 (PIA) — The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Central Luzon now accepts applications for the Regional Inventions Contest.
The contest is open to both public and private sector investors and researchers.
There are six categories in which participants can compete in the Invention contest: Outstanding Invention (Tuklas Award), Outstanding Utility Model, Outstanding Industrial Design, Outstanding Creative Research (Likha Award), and Outstanding Student Creative Research (Sibol Award) for High-school and College students.
DOST officials said Sibol Award is open to high-school and college students. Entries should be duly endorsed by the school wherein the contestants are students and where the creative research was done. The endorser can either be the principal, the school head, the dean of the college or the president of the school or university.
Inventions and registered utility models and industrial designs, creative research or a student creative research that have won in previous Regional/National Invention Contests, shall no longer be eligible to join in subsequent National/Regional Invention Contests in the same category. However, those entries that have won under the Creative Research Category may still join the contest, provided that such entries are now patented/registered at the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPO).
Entries in the invention, utility model and industrial design categories must already have patent, utility model registration and industrial registration, respectively, on or before the deadline for the submission of entries.
Only the inventors, makers and designers appearing in the patent, utility model registration and industrial design registration documents, respectively, may join as contestants in the invention, utility model and
industrial design categories. In case of an invention, a utility model or an industrial design by a group, all members must sign in the accomplished entry forms, waivers and other documents.
The contest is open to all investors, makers, designers, and creative researchers who are Filipino citizens residing in the region. They are eligible to join in any of the six contest categories as applicable of the invention contest. However, an invention, a utility model, an industrial design, a creative research or a student creative research may be entered in only one regional invention contest during the year.
There shall be one qualifier per category for each regional invention contest and each of them shall receive a cash incentives and certificate of recognition during the Awarding and Closing Ceremonies of the contest.
DOST Region 3 will host this event on November 9-11 at Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU) in the town of Bacolor.
The Regional Invention Contest serves as the elimination or qualifying round for the National Invention Contest, pursuant to Section 4 of the Republic Act No. 7459 also known as “Inventors and Invention Incentives Act of the Philippines.”
In support to Proclamation Nos. 255 and 285, the DOST through Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) conducts the National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) annually in celebration of the National Inventors’ Week (NIW).
The NICE is in recognition of the indispensability of the Filipino inventors in the Philippine society and in the landscape of national economic development. It shall give encouragement and recognition to inventors so that they would use their inventive capability by competing for cash rewards and be recognized for other forms of assistance and promotional support for them.
Aside from the National Invention Contest, NICE also feature the Inventor’s Forum – presentation of assistance to inventors and financing programs for inventions; and the Non-Contest Invention Exhibit/Fair – a selling expo for Filipino inventions.
