Question:
What is a banana republic?
Answer:
A Banana republic is a country that is politically unstable, dependent on limited agriculture, and ruled by a small, self-elected, wealthy, and corrupt clique. The original concept was a very direct reference to a “servile dictatorship” which abetted (or directly supported in return for kickbacks) the exploitation of large-scale plantation agriculture (especially banana cultivation). {via}
The Philippines has been called a Banana Republic not only in the foreign circles but by local columnists as well. When can we ever get away from that tag? We hope soon.
Today President Noynoy Aquino assumes office. May he be the good banana we’re waiting for in a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggg, looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggg, looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggg, looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggg,
