Loren Legarda Proposes “Green” Houses for School teachers

Senator Loren Legarda asked government housing officials to jumpstart the mainstreaming of “green housing” by using as a model a nationwide program that will provide affordable housing to public school teachers.
“The government should take the lead in the green revolution,” Sen. Legarda, who is Vice-Chair of the Committee on Education, urged top officials of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC), National Housing Authority (NHA), Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG), and Home Guaranty Corporation (HGC) at a hearing of the Committee on SB 700 and 1203. “To show sincerity on the part of government in implementing our environmental laws, the housing projects must utilize energy-efficient housing materials and be equipped with solid waste and water recycling systems.”
Sen. Legarda also raised the possibility of requiring housing developers to commit to plant a minimum number of trees in every project as part of their undertaking before being awarded a contract to build.
“The housing projects are intended to be implemented as soon as local government units are able to provide available land and the Department of Education completes a survey on the housing needs of their teachers all over the country.
“I hope that the efforts of our housing agencies will complement those of the local government units so we can finally provide our teachers with a home of their own, however modest, as a way of giving back to them for their commitment in molding our youth,” Legarda concluded.
