SANYO Solar Modules Provide Renewable Power to Select IKEA Stores in Canada

SANYO Canada Inc. (SANYO) announced today that IKEA Canada has chosen SANYO HIT® technology to generate renewable energy using the roofs of three IKEA stores in the Greater Toronto Area. The project will support the use of industry-leading conversion efficiency SANYO HIT® Power 210A solar PV modules. The SANYO rooftop PV systems at IKEA stores in Etobicoke, North York and Vaughan together will have a capacity of 750kW, which is the approximate equivalent of what is needed to power 100 average Ontario homes. IKEA Canada will be the first retailer to exclusively own, install and operate what is expected to be the largest rooftop solar panel networks in Ontario under the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program. The systems, installed by AMP Solar Group, will be completed and fully operational by the end of December 2010.
IKEA Canada launched this solar initiative at its Etobicoke store on October 7, 2010 in a ceremony attended by the Honourable Brad Duguid, Ontario Minister of Energy; and the Honourable Laurel Broten, Minister of Children and Youth Services and Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues and MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore.
Other project participants included the Ontario Power Authority and two major local distribution companies, Toronto Hydro and PowerStream.
“IKEA Canada is pleased to partner with SANYO for the installation of three solar networks,” says Natalia Hahn, Sustainability Manager for IKEA Canada. “SANYO’s commitment to sustainability and their development of high efficiency solar panels has been an integral part of this renewable energy program at IKEA Canada.”
IKEA’s vision of helping to create a world where people “take better care of the environment, the Earth’s resources, and each other” has found a perfect fit with SANYO’s mission “to be an indispensable element in the lives of people all over the world by delivering unique and total sustainable solutions that enhance all lifestyles and industries.”
“We are proud to have this opportunity to be part of the solution that provides clean, renewable power using SANYO HIT® PV modules,” said Koshi Terakawa, President of SANYO Canada Inc.
“For projects of this nature, we understand the importance of utilizing high-performance PV modules with proven quality and reliability from an industry leader to maximize the energy harvest,” added KC Chang, SANYO Canada’s General Manager of Solar Systems. “This is especially true for systems designed to leverage the Feed-in Tariff program in Ontario for 20 years.”
SANYO will continue to be active in communities served by IKEA and its partners to help to ensure a sustainable planet for future generations.
