New look for Obama’s Oval Office took shape
Posted on | September 2, 2010 |
Last time the Oval office made the news was when Clinton did the Lewinski-gate. Ok, Bush make-over made the news too.
Below is the Google SketchUp 3D model of Bush Oval Office…
I’d like to post how the Oval Office looked like during Clinton’s 8 year reign, but I’d rather not, I’ll be tempted to insert a Monica joke.
So pass.
Fast forward 2010.
While the Obamas were vacationing, interior redecoration of the Oval Office was in full swing, with relaxed browns and tans as lead colors. The plan was to make it a little more modern and cooler but still elegant and in control, you know, just like Obama’s personality. Of course, changes were made too to make an Obama decorative stamp in the Oval Office history (see table below for American presidents of the past and their chosen decors).
Presiden Obama’s Oval Office design highlights…
New and reupholstered furniture, new paint and wallpaper.
New rug produced and donated by a Michigan-based business and paid for by the non-profit White House Historical Association through a contribution from the Presidential Inaugural Committee. The new wheat, cream and blue colored oval-shaped rug is made of 25 percent recycled wool.
The excerpts on the rug include some of the most famous words ever spoken by Americans.
- “GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE” — Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.
- “NO PROBLEM OF HUMAN DESTINY IS BEYOND HUMAN BEINGS” — John F. Kennedy.
- THE WELFARE OF EACH OF US IS DEPENDENT FUNDAMENTALLY ON THE WELFARE OF ALL OF US” — Teddy Roosevelt.
- “THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF” — FDR’s inaugural speech.
- “THE ARC OF THE MORAL UNIVERSE IS LONG, BUT IT BENDS TOWARD JUSTICE” — Obama’s favorite Martin Luther King quotation.
The two mahogany armchairs in front of the fireplace, both reupholstered with caramel colored leather. There are new table lamps too, with ceramics blue base.
Since its completion in 1934, the modern Oval Office has changed very little except in its furnishings. Most presidents have commissioned a new rug and drapes, but two presidents chose not to change the decor: Eisenhower and Carter. Kennedy’s new decor was just being installed the day he was assassinated.
