CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental, July 14 (PIA) — The Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) has urged local inventors and innovators to have their inventions and innovations “patented” at the Intellectual Property of the Philippines (IPOPHIL).
By patenting, inventors and innovators gain protection of their intellectual properties, Engr. Edgar Garcia, TAPI Director, said in a press conference held here, yesterday.
He said local patents are seen as tools for economic development citing that one way of gauging the productivity of a particular country is through the number of patents being applied for in that country.
He revealed that the Philippines has low patenting rate compared to the other Asian countries which, in turn, affected the country’s productivity index.
“With this, our intention is to increase the number of patents registered and this is the reason why we are promoting the invention contest and exhibition so that we can improve the country’s patenting rate,” Garcia emphasized.
In region 10, the first regional inventions contest and exhibit opened July 13, at the Civic Center of Liceo de Cagayan University, this city.
Regional Director Alfonso Alamban of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said about 30 inventions are on exhibit and vying for the first place posts in the following six categories:Invention Category (Tuklas Award), Utility Model Category, Industrial Design Category, Creative Research Category (Likha Award), and Student Creative Research Category (Sibol Award) for high school and college level.
He said winners of the contest will represent the region in the national inventions contest to be held in 2012.
Alamban said the inventions contest is one of the highlights of the National Science and Technology Week, from July 11-15, 2011, which is anchored on the theme “Nasa Siyensiya ang Pag-asa.”
He also said he believes on the significance of the theme stressing that an innovative community is a competitive community. (PIA10)
