Furniture Exhibits (CEBUNext 2010)

The Department of Tourism (DOT) hailed the 21st Cebu International Furniture and Furnishings Exhibition (CEBUNEXT) 2010 held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
DOT Secretary Ace Durano said, “We stand behind CEBUNEXT in its bid to make the country Asia’s design destination. It’s truly a testament to the skills of our craftsmen who never fail to impress the world with Pinoy creativity.”
This year’s show focused on sustainable raw materials and eco-friendly designs and products.
Special settings booth showcasing the innovative ideas of local furniture designers and manufacturers using wastes, as well as natural and eco-friendly materials were set up in the exhibition hall.
Also at cEBUNEXT 2010 was the Materials Library special setting – a replica of the actual library housed at the CFIF buidling in Jagobiao, Mandaue City — which featured swatches of natural and sustainable raw materials that can be supplied by local communities.
“Our country will also benefit from the global furniture industry with our indigenous eco-friendly materials readily available as furniture components,” said Durano.
The opening of the international furniture show was led by DOT Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque, Jr., DOT Undersecretary Phineas Alburo, CFIF President Angela Paulin, CFIF Vice President Charles Streegan, and Mandaue Mayor Jonas Cortez.
One of the the show’s honored guests was John McGuire, an icon in the US furniture industry who was instrumental in the growth of the export furniture sector in Cebu. McGuire was the first American to bring Cebu-made furniture to the United States.
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Furniture Industries of the Philippines (CFIP) also conluded their annual furniture fair — Manila Now – The Philippine International Furniture Show at the SMX Convention Center. More than 7,000 visitors visited the fair, including hundreds of furniture importers from Europe, Asia, Middle East, and the U.S.
“The designs I find here are always very distinct. I’ve been coming to the Philippines for this show for about eight years now,” says Dell Washman, a furniture retailer from the U.S..
